Natural Healthy Lifestyle Habits: AVOID THESE

July 16, 2010

by Judy Dolan

To benefit health, take care to choose healthy habits and products not always considered part of a health regiment. Not only should we avoid toxic chemicals in foods, but also in body care products and the environment. In addition, avoid genetically altered foods and smoking as well as drugs and alcohol, especially in large amounts.

Avoid Chemicals
To help maximize health, use only products that nourish the body. Avoid chemicals in foods from additives and bleached flour and sugar. Also, be sure to avoid chemicals in cosmetics and lotions. Our body absorbs nutritional ingredients as well as toxic chemicals. Avoid chemically polluted air like smoky rooms. Secondary smoke kills. Obviously, the chemicals are usually not so toxic that they are immediately identifiable, but over time, our body can become inundated with unwanted substances. Read ingredient labels. Find out what ingredients are when you don’t know by looking it up or stay away from it if you cannot find out.

Avoid GMOs
Avoid genetically engineered foods or genetically modified foods (GMOs) by buying organic. Full implications of GMOs are unknown. Incorporating genes from other species into a food may benefit the grower/producer with longer shelf life, being pest-free or whatever, but for the consumer the results may not be so great. Avoid often genetically engineered soybeans by purchasing organic soy products to be sure you do not consume GMOs.

Avoid Smoking, Drugs and Alcohol
Last, but not least is smoking, drugs and alcohol. Not smoking is the number one thing a person can do to benefit health (that is, if you are not an alcoholic or drug addict). Smoking can lead to cancer and other problems in virtually any part of the body. The first step to quitting is to want to stop. Replace the bad habit with a good one like walking around the block, going up steps two at a time, marching in place or calling a friend or family member.

Many, if not most medications have adverse side effects. I cannot tell you not to follow a doctor’s recommendations, but if you take small steps over a long period to improve your health, your doctor may give you approval to stop many medications. If possible, the benefits of getting the body healthy enough not to need medication far exceed the benefits of drugs. If you use recreational drugs, this may be doing far more damage than you think. My recommendation is to do whatever you can to stop. Drug abuse is actually much worse than smoking if you become addicted because it could end your life much faster than smoking.

Alcohol use can lead to alcohol abuse, which can lead to immediate behavioral problems and physical impairment. Long-term use can lead to a greater risk of heart and liver disease, cancer and brain damage. Over time, it can become addictive leading to other problems as well.

In conclusion, to benefit health, avoid:
•   Chemicals found in air pollution, cigarettes, body care products, processed foods, bleached flour and sugar
•   GMOs
•   smoking, drugs and alcohol
