Grain Mills - Why Bother? More Healing Power!
July 21, 2009
by Judy Dolan
Why is it a good idea to use grain mills? Why would anyone want to go to the trouble of using a grain grinder when flour is so readily available? Several good reasons, some of which may surprise you, exist for grinding grain just prior to use. Whole grains are better for us and give us variety. Grinding grain using grain mills can save money, add greater flavor to recipes, preserve nutrients, and even increase healing power.
Many health benefits vanish from wheat during the processing of traditional white flour. Though vitamins and minerals are added back, nature does it better and our bodies know the difference. Significant health benefits arise from the consumption of whole grains. The fiber in grains aids digestion. Other vital components in grains lower the risks of many chronic diseases like type II diabetes and other health troubles such as obesity.
Variety is the spice of life. Flour mills can grind more than just wheat. Add more variety to your diet in the grain department. Grind other whole grains as well as beans, legumes and nuts. In this manner, our bodies receive a wider variety of vitamins and minerals needed for optimal health. The cost of whole grains may be less than already ground grain, but may be about the same. In any case, medical cost may be less in the short term as well as in the long term. Due to the significant health benefits associated with including whole grains in the diet, medical problems are bound to occur less frequently, be less likely and be less severe. Grinding sprouted grains should exponentially improve the odds of better, longer lasting health. Much of the flavor of whole grains disappears during processing with the removal of the bran and flavorful oils. Add color and full-bodied whole grain flavor to recipes by keeping the grain intact prior to grinding. The body craves whole grain goodness. Give the body what it needs for greater satisfaction.
Preserve nutrients by using wheat mills as you need the flour for greater nutritional value. A certain amount of nutritional value is lost when grains are ground and stored. This is especially true if the milling process generates too much heat. Grinding smaller amounts and using manual grain mills help limit heat production. Maximize the flavor and nutritional value by grinding just prior to use.
Finally, get more healing power out of whole grains. If you sprout grains, lots more enzymes for increased healing get packed into the grain. These enzymes work as catalysts that greatly increase the rate of chemical reactions and can help promote healing. After sprouting the grain:
- Dehydrate the sprouted grain with a food dehydrator like L’Equip or Excalibur Dehydrator
- Grind the grain using a grain grinder
- Prepare your recipe, preferably a recipe that will not be cooked
- Eat and enjoy
Why would anyone want to go to the trouble of using wheat grinders? Well, first it is hardly any trouble. Secondly, taking advantage of the health benefits of whole grains and the wide selection of grains can save money on health costs. Using grain mills just prior to grain use may save money over pre-ground flour (though not always) and add flavor to recipes. Get more nutrients from home grinding and if sprouted, gain potentially significant increase in the healing power within our body.
