The skin produces a protective emollient called sebum. This substance acts as a softening, soothing, moisturizing, cream to the skin. Individuals with low amounts of sebum in their skin may have dry, flaky, and itchy skin. Essential oils with longer-lasting base note aromas such as patchouli oil and sandalwood essential oil, as well as strong floral scents such as rose essential oil and ylang ylang are ideal in dry skin care products.

Remove from the heat when the water is incorporated. Once the mixture cools and turns creamy, add the essential oils and blend. Apply liberally to clean skin after a bath or any time.
Individuals with oily skin may have overactive sebaceous glands. Regular cleansing with essential oils allows the oils' astringency to help remove excess oil and prevent clogged pores.
