Bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids or vitamin P, are natural antioxidants and natural antibiotics found largely in pulp and rind citrus fruits that maximize the benefits of vitamin C. Types of bioflavonoids include catechins, naringin, flavones, and flavanols. A bioflavonoid deficiency could result in miscarriages, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, easy bruising, and retinal hemorrhages. Bioflavonoids are thought to improve circulation, improve vision and improve liver function. They are found in cantaloupes, black currants, apricots, blackberries, prunes, and buckwheat.

Bioflavonoids, commonly referred to as vitamin P, are natural antioxidants abundant in the pulp and rind of citrus fruits and are found in some vegetables. They are nontoxic and excesses are excreted in the urine. They maximize the benefits of vitamin C by inhibiting its breakdown. Also, they benefit health by maintaining capillaries according to some researchers. Types of bioflavonoids include flavanols, flavanones like catechins and naringin, flavones, and isoflavonoids.

A bioflavonoid deficiency could result in easy bruising, brain and retinal hemorrhages, bleeding gums, and other abnormalities. Also, bioflavonoids are thought to help prevent many heart diseases. Studies show bioflavonoids stop or slow malignant growths, act as natural antibiotics, and destroy certain bacteria found in foods. Reports have shown vitamin C and many bioflavonoids work together to produce benefits to the immune system. Experience the benefits of bioflavonoids by dehydrating and juicing bioflavonoid-rich foods. Also, studies show if a diet contains enough fruits and vegetables all heart disease and many cancer related diseases can be prevented.

Virtually all bioflavonoids contain antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. They also help:

  • counteract the effects of alcohol, pollution, pesticides, & rancid fats
  • decrease cholesterol
  • improve aging
  • improve circulation
  • improve liver function
  • improve vision and eye diseases
  • prevent blood clotting

  • protect against cancer and heart disease
  • protect against infections
  • reduce bruising easily
  • reduce pain
  • strengthen blood vessel walls
  • treat and prevent of menstrual disorders

Foods that are high in bioflavonoids include apricots, blackberries, black currants, broccoli, buckwheat, cantaloupes, cherries, grapefruits, grapes, oranges, prunes, and lemons.
